MalTravAle Podcast Episode 18 The Lake District
Podcast Episode 18 this week-a trip around our glorious Lake District - so many great pubs and brewers to cover, so we are splitting 3 ways- Nick the 5 best scenic pubs, Mike 5 great breweries & where to drink a pint of their finest
Pubs in order of mentions in the podcast
Dog & Gun, Lake Road Keswick – bang in the town centre, Green King house, but Keswick beers also feature – do try the Hungarian Goulash.
Watermill Inn, Ings, LA8 9PY beside the busy A591 road to Windermere – sit with a pint and watch the speed cameras flash was Nick’s ideal afternoon! up to 8 beers on including many pf the dog themed onsite brewery beers – look out for the window with the brewery view- good food. (lots of dogs)
The Ruskin Bar, Lakeside Hotel Newby Bridge – nice side bar in a very posh 4 Star Hotel – home to Football managers and teachers’ conferences! – very nice garden with Windermere lapping at your feet – a little pricey but very good pints of Hawkshead Gold & Bitter – they do like a tight sparkler – you can catch a steam ferry to here from Bowness.
Badger Bar, Glen Rothay Hotel, Rydal, LA22 9LR. Gents toilet in the mountain! Great country pub – comfy chairs, wood fires etc etc and even a badger cam and Badger Bar Ale brewed by Old School Brewery.
Yanwath Gate Inn, Yanwath Penrith, CA10 2LF – a little out of the way but worth seeking out to the south of Penrith, Gastro pub also own the Butchers Arms at Crosby Ravensworth – always feature a range of local ales – would recommend a special meal here
The Pheasant Inn, Bassenthwaite, Bassenthwaite Lake, Cockermouth CA13 9YE – 500-year-old coaching inn with rooms, gone a bit posh you may be supping next to folk having afternoon tea a very scenic setting.
Black Bull Inn & Hotel, Coniston, LA21 8DU (also known as the Bull) another fantastic old coaching inn home to the Coniston Brewery – greatest place on earth to sample a Coniston Blue Bird, or 1/3-pint paddle(s) with all their beers – another pint with a stunning view setting.
Albert, Queens Square, Bowness-on-Windermere LA23 3BY (also features in Episode 13) – large Robinsons house with expanded outdoor terrace – a good place to try some Old Tom – large food offering and can get very busy at peak times
The Bridge Hotel, Buttermere CA13 9UZ, out in the ‘Shire’ a very welcoming pub, hotel and self-catering gem – always a great range of local ales including local lagers such as Whistling Pig Pilsner and Jinny Howelt helles from Workington.
Beer Hall, Hawkshead Brewery Tap, Mill Yard, Staveley LA8 9LR. Ubiquitous brewery in an industrial estate – but this was one of the first and really well done – we love the upstairs – huge bar with brewery behind and nice walk to loss passing fermenting tanks – most of brewing now been moved offsite by newish owners Halewood and tends to be more Keg than cask on these days.
