The Malt TravAle Podcast
Episode 16 – MalTravAle on the Road and Live
After several months of Zoom drinking, the three of us finally get to sit around a table, drink too many beers and twaddle on – this Episode is a combination of 5 live recordings around a number of pub and tap tables – covering the fine towns of York, Harrogate and Knaresborough and a visit to one of the legendary homes of modern Yorkshire brewing – Roosters – a tale of 13 pubs and over 22 different beers that made our voices go very funny – hope you enjoy some of this, as much as we did!
Part 1- York
The Hop Fossgate York, - one of Nick and my faves – in the Beer Mecca that is Fossgate – directly opposite the Blue Bell and Fossgate Tap – a large former Italian restaurant with Pizza oven still intact and firing out very good pizza’s – Ossett owned and a great place to sample their full range – we love the small table in the window to the right of the door
Brew York, Walmgate (Walmgate carries on from Fossgate after you pass over the very nice Foss Bridge)- site of the original brewery – though most brewing now moved out of city centre – huge drinking complex – Beer Hall, trap room and outdoor spaces - Cask is best bought downstairs in the Tap but there is normally a bigger range upstairs in the Beer Hall though this can get booked out.
Old Shamble Tavern, The Shambles AKA Diagon Alley look out for mini wizards – stick to the Market side but don’t forget the pie shop next door! Ye Olde Bottle shop and Bar – great outdoorish sitting area on the Market side always a fantastic range of Yorkshire beers available
Market Cat, Jubbergate – opposite side of the Market form the Shamble – newish shop conversion Thornbridge Pivovar collab – fantastic building to drink beer in especially top floor in the booths overlooking the market and York’s medieval sky line – another York venue that gets Beer n pizzas right
The Snickleway Inn, Goodramgate (Snickles are little alleys) – one of Bruce’s lunch hour haunts – formerly the Anglers Arms – one of many York pubs that’s claims to be the most haunted and certainly a historic place to drink very good beers – nearby College Green at the rear of the Minster has been a great Covid friendly place to drink beer – be interesting to see if York Council continue to support this.
Part 2 Harrogate and Knaresborough
Harrogate
Harrogate Tap, Station Parade – directly off Harrogate rail station – long bar, separate snug and nice outdoor area next to the taxi rank – at least 11 beer offers – think mahogany and banquets! A great starting or ending point for a trip around Harrogate
Cold bath Brewing Co – Kings Road (opposite the Conference Centre) – Brewery at the rear, spacious tap and terrace out the front – beer offer is their own plus other Yorkshire beers – quite a diverse keg range as well.
Starling Independent Bar Café Kitchen, Oxford Street – very chic stripped back café bar over several floors and very nice beer garden out the back (See if you can see evidence of the old milking barn), extensive range of cask and keg – very informative electronic beer screens, interesting and different food offer can definitely recommend the poutines
Major Tom’s Social, The Ginnel – Their website describes this as a ‘Youth club for grown ups’ and its definitely got that vibe – large upstairs room DIY tables and furniture – part art gallery and games den – there will definitely be an interesting global beer offer
Roosters Brewery Tap, Hornbeam Park – Industrial park on edge of Harrogate – use Hornbeam Station – beer hall with windows overlooking the busy brewery – street food offer changes – full range of Roosters catalogue available #
Knaresborough
Cross Keys, Cheapside (near the castle) was a typical Tetley’s town pub now Ossett range of rooms to choose.
Mitre, Station Road – just off the North bound railway platform – a Market Town tavern again range of drinking rooms and some nice outdoor seating if the weathers nice – you can time your last pint around the closing of the level crossing to catch your York bound train.
Track and Sleeper, Platform 2 Knaresborough Station – very newly opened (wasn’t quite ready for our Summer 21 trip) owned by Gorilla Brewing – larger room and snug with a bar made out of railway sleepers and look out for the railway track – 6 handpulls.
Part 3
Malton
The New Malton, Market Place - Nick’s local Grade II listed foody pub with 3 good beers to try overlooking the finest Market Place in the world!
