York Villages
Tockwith – Boot and Shoe 4 miles outside of York a Sam Smiths Pub – Public and Lounge bar – Old Brewery Bitter on Cask
Lakes/Edinburgh (see also Episode 18)
Bowness – The Albert Queens Squ. Robinsons house but often a range of cask on – handy for Lake and shops – large outdoor terrace.
Staveley – The Hawkshead Brewery Beer Hall – does what it says on the tin – very nice seating and drinking area on the Mezzanine floor – buts as is the trend these days drinking in an industrial estate
Kirkstone Pass Inn – said to be Cumbria's highest pub and currently the second highest in Britain. Dating back to 1496 very atmospheric interior rom WhatPub: including a photo taken in the infamously brutal winter of 1963 showing two men standing next to a snowdrift higher than their heads. The view from the outside tables is one of the best in the Lakes.
Edinburgh – The Last Drop on Grass Market – Nicholsons pub so get the app ready for a cheap pint – site of the Public Hanging site
York Part 3 – the final stagger.
Blue Boar, Castlegate – close to Cliffords Tower and Museum – reputedly the body of Highwayman Dick Turpin was put on show in the pub follow his hanging – atmospheric busy at the weekends
3 Tuns, Coppergate, Marstons house and another that claims to be one of York’s oldest pubs – quirky with uneven and sloping floors – normally a fine pint of Pedi
Pavement Vaults, Piccadilly. – formerly the White Swan Hotel now part of the growing Pivovar chain (see York Tap, Pivni, Market Cat …….)- large windowed drinking area with good range of beers.
Market Cat, Jubbergate on the Market – jont venture between Thornbridge and Pivovar openendin late 2018 – mix of seating some nice dark booths downstairs – window seats with stunning views on the 1st and 2nd floors
Golden Fleece – Pavement – opposite Marks and Spencers Food Hall doors – featured on TV’s Most Haunted very olde wordly – run by Ghostly Inns ltd - normally quite a range of decent cask on.
Golden Slipper – Goodramgate (Bruce was travelling around by Bike and is a bit geographically challenged – this is close to the Snickleway below) - unspoilt 15th Century boozer – the medival slipper that gave the pub its name is on display
Royal Oak, Goodramgate – a pub of many names – has 17th Century plastered on the wall – but records suggest that it was built in 1591 – nice snug Theakston beers normally on form – Bruce also goes on about the food a lot
Black Swan on Peasholm Green – 3 roomed former timber framed house – Olde worlde tick Flok and Jazz nights – partnership with Theakstons.
Blue Bell, Fossgate one of York’s legends and on what is now the Beer Street of York Fossgate – you could send a whole day drinking down Fossgate and adjoining Walmgate – worth mentioning that since the podcast - the former Army & Navy store next door is now te Fossgate Tap in partnership with Turning Point Brew Co. A drink in either the small front or back bar is a must – if the weather there is some nice , if rustic, seating outside the front of the pub
The Hop, Fossgate – across the road from the Bell and one of our favourites especially the small table in the front right window – Ossett Brewery – former Pizza restaurant with said ovens still retained – bit of a tardis huge drinking and eating space
Brew York Tap, Walmgate – probably wins an award for building least looking like a brewery/Tap
Red Lion, Marchant Gate (where Fossgate joins Walmgate – on way to Brew York) – large outdoor drinking area - though part of the site was a former maltings – if you like Brew Yorks ecliptic offer this is your beer mecca - sit besides the brew tanks or outside in the large beer garden
Ye Olde Shambles Tavern – down York’s very own Diagon Alley get passed the wand shops and look out for the pork pie shop next door – we would suggest using the entrance of Yorks great market and theres is a great seating area overlooking the butchers and fish stalls
Snickleway Inn – Goodramgate – one of our Lockdown haunts as you could get takeway pints to drink in College Green across the road and features live in Episode 16. From Whatpub - very old, historic pub, this has been called many names since it was known as the House of Tudor. During the siege of York in 1644 it was used as the Royalist magazine. Reputed to be the most haunted pub in York, especially in the cellar where a malevolent spirit causes havoc at times.
